Do the police and government use cell phone tracking?
People living in the US have always had their doubts that the police and the government use cell phone tracking technology to keep track of the citizens. It is already a known fact that in a majority of cases, a search warrant is not need by the FBI and other police agencies for tracking the location of any cell phone being used by an American. Similarly the United States government also seems to have a relation with cell phone providers but on the contrary they deem it to be a very complicated relationship.
A representative from the general counsel of the National Security Agency agreed to the fact that that government indeed has the authority to track citizens with the use of data collected by their cell phones. Nonetheless the NSA has not directly agreed whether the government is or is not using cell phone tracking technology. In fact rather than providing a direct response, it was simply added that a memo outlining the exact cell phone tracking capabilities of the government’s is being put together by the intelligence community.
In April it was also discovered by researchers that locations and timestamps inside devices were being stored by the mobile phones, while users were unaware of this fact. It had in fact been confirmed by Apple, that data is indeed collected by these devices but they also added that they were not using that data in any way. American citizens are quite doubtful about the fact whether their cell phones are being tracked by the government or not. One thing is for sure is that if such a law was being carried out; American citizens would definitely be alarmed. Thus there is indeed no doubt that cell phone tracking is and can be used by the law but whether the government is using it too, is still unclear or rather complicated.
